Along with the great Robert Kapsis, I co-authored a chapter on The Wrong Man for the British Film Institute’s collection of essays entitled Re-viewing Hitchcock: New Critical Perspectives (Bob is also the volume’s editor). The book, which was published by Bloomsbury in February 2026, approaches Alfred Hitchcock’s prolific career in film and television from a reception focus, charting the changing fortunes of the master auteur’s work from 1926’s silent The Lodger to his penultimate film, the controversial Frenzy. In our chapter, we argue that The Wrong Man historically was undervalued but also that its reputation has risen and will continue to rise, especially since it taps into contemporary anxieties in its depiction of a reckless prosecution and the resulting family trauma.
